Anti-depressant used during menopause 'raises risk of broken bones'

This is a recent article from the Daily Mail
Women who take common anti-depressants to counter the impact of menopause may have a 76 per cent higher risk of broken bones, scientists warn.
The risk appears to last for several years after women take the drugs, leading to calls for doctors to reduce the period for which they are prescribed.
For many women, the onset of the menopause triggers mood changes and depression, and each year thousands are prescribed a type of anti-depressant called SSRIs - selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, the best known of which is Prozac.
The drugs are also sometimes prescribed to help women cope with other effects of the menopause, such as irritable bowel syndrome, hot flushes and night sweats.
But new research suggests a side effect of the drugs may be a weakening of the bones.
SSRIs are among the most commonly prescribed drugs in Britain. Some 30 million prescriptions for them were given out in England last year, at a cost of £74 million (NZ$170 million).
There are no figures for how many are given to menopausal women, but it is thought that some doctors prefer to prescribe anti-depressants rather than hormone replacement therapy, fearing HRT can increase the risk of heart problems.
But the balance is beginning to swing back in favour of HRT, with new NHS guidelines expected to tell doctors to stop excluding certain women from access to the drugs.
Researchers from Northeastern University in Boston analysed data from 370,000 American menopausal women over 12 years. Of these, 137,000 took SSRIs, including fluoxetine, which is known as Prozac, as well as hydrobromide, oxalate, fluvoxamine, paroxetine and sertraline.
The researchers compared this group with 236,000 women who took indigestion medications over the same period.
Among those who took the SSRIs, the rate of fractures was 76 per cent higher one year after starting treatment, 73 per cent higher after two years and 67 per cent higher after five years.
The researchers stressed that their study was purely based on statistics, so they could draw no definitive conclusions about cause and effect. But previous research has suggested that anti-depressants may alter the way bones grow, making them thinner and weaker.
The authors, led by injury prevention expert Professor Matthew Miller, wrote in Injury Prevention, part of the British Medical Journal group: "SSRIs appear to increase fracture risk among middle-aged women without psychiatric disorders, an effect sustained over time, suggesting that shorter duration of treatment may decrease this.
"Future efforts should examine whether this association pertains at lower doses."
The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence is expected to publish guidelines later this year telling NHS doctors to stop denying HRT to menopausal women who have high blood pressure.
Specialists have long complained that many are being unfairly denied HRT and left to deal with the effects of the menopause unaided.

South Korea Psychiatrists Now Claiming Autism is 1 in 38 Children, Even more than 1 in 110 as US Claims? Sounds like More Drugging for All Kids

In a recent article by Shari Roan of the LA Times on May 9, 2011
A new study found a rate of autism spectrum disorder of one in 38 children in South Korea, included highly functioning children who appear to have a milder disorder usually called Asperger's syndrome. Whether Asperger's syndrome is a distinct disorder or a variation of autism is a question under debate by psychiatrists.

The current edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual the text book of mental disorders lists Asperger's syndrome as distinct from autism. But a proposal for a new DSM (DSM-5), which will be published in 2013, is to delete the Asperger's diagnosis and lump these cases in with the larger group of autism. That is what the authors of the South Korean study did, which resulted in a much higher rate of autism than the one in 110 normally quoted in the United States. End of excerpt of LA Times Article.

In stoprx’s view this simple provides cover for more psychiatrists to prescribe Autism symptom drugs mainly antidepressants and antipsychotic drugs which are primarily used to treat severe behavioral problems. An especially popular medication for autistic kids is the antidepressant citalopram, sold under the brand name Celexa, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI).

If you believe these statistics with so many children getting this prognosis of autism and or depressed thoughts in their childhood there will be nobody remaining who is not on BigPharma’s psychotropic drugs. This doesn’t count the existing population that didn’t get drugged when they grew up. The world population is approximately 7 billion. So if this absurd 1 in 38 figure were to be correct just on autism alone there are approximately 40 thousand autistic people per million. If psychiatry and BigPharma had their way virtually all humans would be on some kind of pharmaceutical drug from cradle to grave, and the human species will be doomed out of existence. It is up to parents to contest and fight for the health of their children and free kids from this pharmaceutical engulfing madness.

Major Drug Stores and Fish Oil Manufactures sued over PCB’s. It begs Another Question, What is in your Prescription?

A lawsuit was filed in San Francisco earlier this month against several Omega-3 Fish oil manufacturers, drugstores and vitamin producers. Reuters news reported that two plaintiffs and Mateel Environmental Justice Foundation are suing several fish oil manufacturers and pharmacies that sell the supplements over their purported PCB toxicity. They claim that their tests found high levels of PCB’s (polychlorinated biphenyls which are synthetic (human-made) chemicals produced initially over 90 years ago). They have been banned since 1979. PCBs were used so much that they are found unnaturally in the environment. All fish either in oceans, rivers or fish oil supplements contain at least trace amounts of PCBs. The EPA lists PCBs as a probable human carcinogen. PCBs have a similar chemical structure to PBDE’s, which are currently used as flame retardants in electronics, furniture, and other consumer goods, and PCBs have been found to cause tumors in laboratory animals. The chemical was designed to last a long time without breaking down, which it has accomplished. Essentially mankind has contaminated its own food supply.

According to news reports the lawsuit is based on California’s Prop. 65 which requires manufactures to inform consumers of their right to know the contents and ingredients of the products they consume. The main reason we site this news is that Omega-3 fish oil has been a natural antidepressant, and should remain to be so as with adding fresh fish to ones diet. It also is also an eye opener for consumers to know the ingredients in over the counter and especially prescription medications. Consumers need to be fully aware of the products that they buy and the side effects that they cause. More will be known as this lawsuit progresses.

As far as, prescription antidepressants more has been found out about the long-term side effects of the most common SSRI (serotonin reuptake inhibitors) antidepressants. The long-term effects include sexual dysfunction, weight gain 18-50% of the time, sleep disturbance, vivid dreams and nightmares, insomnia 18-20% of the time, lethargy and fatigue, decreased libido, tardive dyskinesia dystonia (severe body movement disorder, which is mostly permanent according to a report from Antidepressant facts. They also report possible neurological driven severe mania agitation which can lead to suicide attempts, self-harm and suicide.

Reading and learning about what’s in your pill will provide a better life. Unfortunately, the long term side effects of SSRI’s bring more pharmaceutical drug solutions to alleviate those effects, and connecting the consumer from cradle to grave to pharmaceuticals and an unhappy life. There are many alternatives to pharma drugs we urge you to take a look at those alternatives.

A New Study Shows Antidepressant Drugs Are Only as Effective as a Placebo

Antidepressants may only provide relief in extreme cases a recent study indicates, and they are no more effective for most patients than placebo pills according to a new study released this week by New York Times reporter Benedict Carey. Prior studies have painted a conflicting picture, since most studies have been pharmaceutical industry supported which have found the drugs reduced depression symptoms. A number of unpublished or buried studies show that antidepressants show no significant benefits over a placebo. This recent study also evaluated people who were considered to be more moderately depressed. The conflict in results with industry supported studies and unpublished studies may also indicate pharmaceutical industry tampering with the results from prior studies. Since these buried studies show antidepressants have no more effectiveness then a placebo then industry trial studies could be viewed as fraudulent.
The recent study was performed with government grants by a team of researchers, and psychologists. These psychologists also consult widely with drug makers. Media reports that the researchers were from the University of Pennsylvania, New Mexico, Colorado and Vanderbilt Universities. The group evaluated six large drug trials, including 728 men and women, about half of them with severe depression and half with more moderate symptoms. Three of the trials were of the SSRI Paxil by GlaxoSmithKline, and the other three were of imipramine a generic tricyclic classed drug. The researchers indicate that similar SSRI drugs like Prozac, and Lexapro would show similar results.
All the advertising in the world can’t beat a real study of a drug’s effectiveness. It is also possible that the prior studies were rigged to show antidepressants were effective. If this is the case then that is criminally fraudulent by pharmaceutical industry supported researchers and drug companies. These prior trials need to be investigated by State Attorney Generals for integrity and authenticity. There also needs to be more independent studies and no industry supported studies. There is clearly a conflict of interest with industry sponsored studies. Patients need to look at the many alternatives to antidepressants and we can add a placebo as a new alternative.

An Alternative to Psychotropic Drugs

Virtually every campus or company mass shooting involves the shooter taking an SSRI(selective re-uptake inhibitor) like Prozac, Zoloft, Exfexor, and Paxal among others. A lot of these shooters report that they feel like zombies and they want to get "off their meds". There is a book Prozac Backlash by Joseph Glenmullen which he talks about an aggressive effect when a person is taken "off their meds" abruptly. But the Columbine killers Klebold and Harris were clearly on medication.
These drugs, the huge pharmaceutical companies that make them, the doctor who prescribe them, and the government agencies who support questionable research but are suppose to be the "watchdog" are all guilty of creating a health and legal menace.
The effects of these drugs are well chronicled and are advertised as potentially causing adverse effects such as anxiety, agitation, panic attacks, insomnia, irritability, hostility, aggressiveness, impulsivity, hypomania, mania, and thoughts of suicide. We are certain nobody wishes to feel any of these effects, and what mother wishes to have their child feel this way.
Chiropractors have been studying and addressing the neurotransmitters of the body since the 50's when Dr. Palmer discovered that Chiropractors can correct abnormalities of the intellect as well as the body. During that period Judges would commit mental patients to Chiropractic Sanitarium, and they produces and much higher cure and discharge rate of release then their rival sanitariums.
Chiropractor practice is a drug free alternative solution to the mass murder effects of pharmaceutical. Before you even think of putting your child on a mind altering drug you should take the safe step and see a chiropractor and exercise a natural cure
